Book Review - Since We Fell by Dennis Lehane

In Since We Fell by Dennis Lehane, we learn about Rachel Childs, a journalist who had an on-air meltdown ending her career in broadcast journalism and starting her life as a relative recluse who gets panic attacks at the thought of even leaving her house. Her husband has been patiently and lovingly working with Rachel to help  her feel more comfortable in the world. But on a good day when Rachel is getting lunch with a friend,  Rachel catches her husband in town when he's supposed to be out of the country. Suddenly Rachel begins questioning the foundation of her life and the one person she thought she could trust.

The thing I like least about writing book reviews is deciding how many stars to give a book. Similarly, the thing I like least about teaching is assigning letter grades to student work. I'm much more comfortable engaging in a conversation about what I did or didn't like about a book (hence my love of book clubs) and providing feedback to students about their work. So I ultimately decided to give this book four stars, but it very well could have earned five. The first part of the book is about Rachel's back story leading up to the moment she catches her husband in a lie. This part of the book consists of the first 100 pages and we get a detailed, in-depth understanding of Rachel as a person. Part of me loved how Dennis Lehane developed this character with so much depth but the other part of me read through this section quickly in order to get to the action...it was supposed to be a mystery after all! It wasn't until over halfway through the book that the tension and mystery developed. It was like I was on an endless upward climb on a roller coaster and then in one split second we reached the peak and came bolting down at the very end of the book. It was a thrilling ride but I wish that the excitement had lasted a bit longer and the climb hadn't taken quite so long.

So ultimately I really enjoyed reading this book. I was drawn by the characters and the story was gripping. Sure, there may have been a few things I would have tweaked...shortened or lengthened. But in the end the book was good, really good. And I would definitely recommend it. Interested? Click on the link below to buy your copy today!
