The Heirs
Book Review - The Heirs by Susan Rieger
Before I get down to business with my book review of The Heirs by Susan Rieger, I have a special offer for my loyal readers: a giveway! Enter here for your chance to win $100 gift code toward your purchase of a JORD Watch. One lucky person will win, but everyone will receive a consolation code worth $25 once the contest ends (you have until July 2, 2017 to enter!) I'm a little weary of giveaways, especially as a blogger. But I chose to partner with JORD Watches for two reasons:
- They are headquartered in St. Louis, MO! In case you didn't know, I'm originally from Missouri and my parents live in St. Louis (it is my second favorite city, with Chicago, of course, being my top!) St. Louis is a great foodie destination (my favorites being Brasserie and Pastaria, both restaurants by Chef Gerard Craft) and they have a great art museum, which I try to visit almost every time I'm in town.
- "JORD is run by artists, designers, marketers, and minders. We spend our days creating, considering, arguing, and hopefully agreeing. Then we'll scrap it all for the joy of starting new. We have fun. This is our journey." As an instructor in the School of Art + Design at Indiana University, this idea of fail early, fail often is one I try to impart on my students. I love their philosophy of "creating, considering, arguing, and hopefully agreeing." This is the creative process and the way I hope my students will work in their careers.
So after some consideration, I agreed to partner with JORD Watches. They offered me a watch of my choice in exchange for offering this giveaway and posting about their watch. Once I received the watch in the mail, I knew I had made a good decision to agree to this collaboration. I think the watch is even more beautiful in person that it appears in their photographs.
Okay - back to business - and the reason why you clicked on that link! My review of The Heirs by Susan Rieger. This story is a beautiful portrait of the Falkes Family, a mother and father with five boys. They are a complex, flawed, but a loving family. After the death of the father, Rupert Falkes, another woman comes forward claiming he fathered her two boys and they are rightful heirs to his inheritance. Susan Rieger beautifully reveals information in ways we least expect. Every character is flawed (as all humans are) but have redeeming qualities as well. I fell in love with the Falkes family and I think you will, too.
This is one of the more eloquent books I've read in a while.
