Book Review - In the Name of Gucci by Patricia Gucci

I selected In The Name of Gucci by Patricia Gucci for my student reading group this semester. So far it has inspired discussions on the ethics of fast fashion, what makes a successful brand, the pros and cons of luxury fashion, the history of fashion, and more. I'm looking forward to one more discussion with my students on the final chapters of this book before moving on to our next one.

This book is the story of Aldo Gucci, the making of the Gucci brand, and the love of Aldo's life, Bruna. The Gucci brand began with Guccio Gucci and was taken over by Aldo and his brothers upon Guccio's death in 1953. Aldo began working in Gucci stores at the age of 20 and quickly found passion in expanding the brand to new locations. Aldo met Bruna when she was working as a shop girl in one of the Gucci stores. However, he was already married to another woman, with whom he had three sons. Despite this, Aldo and Bruna found a way to make their romance work, albeit in an unconventional way. Ultimately, this is their love story as written by their daughter, Patricia.

If you're interested in learning more about the Gucci brand, I'd suggest visiting the Gucci Museo website. I haven't had the opportunity to visit this museum, but it is definitely on my short list of places to travel.
