The Dry
Book Review - The Dry by Jane Harper
This book was selected for me by one of my book clubs (have you heard? I'm in four!) I usually like to read my book club books right before our meetings so that the book is fresh in my mind - but three days before our book club was scheduled to meet I realized I hadn't even started it. So I had to pound through this one in just 3 days - good thing it was a murder mystery that kept me wondering, "who did it?!" I can always count on a good murder mystery to be a quick and enjoyable read.
The main character in this book is Aaron Falk, a federal agent who lives in Melbourne, Australia. He is summoned back to his hometown of Kiewarra after his childhood best friend is found dead along with his wife and son. He received a cryptic note that read, "You Lied. Luke Lied. Be at the funeral." Aaron had planned to return home for the funeral and leave right away but he was asked to stay and help the local police with the investigation. The longer he stays, the more information about his past surfaces along with old grudges and accusations. He soon finds himself looking into two different crimes separated by more than 20 years.
Truth be told, I think I was in such a rush to read this one that I missed a lot of the more subtle clues revealed by the author. After I read a review published by The New York Times, I realized I missed making some of the connections that the author had embedded into the story. Everyone in my book club agreed that it was a great mystery and we suspected all the wrong characters of the crime!
